my best friends were my church friends as a teen, but i didn't feel like i fit in. i think i have leaning to secular music & secular tv to blame that on. secular music & secular tv are primarily to distance the church. secular music in church. i took my very sexual friend to smallgroup. we had a laying on of hands. i asked her if she ever saw anything like that. she said on tv.  Some folks mentioned that they had been to churches where songs were used such as: “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5, “Your Body Is a Wonderland” by John Mayer (that Sunday’s service was about sexuality), lots of U2, (Alan across from my dorm room LOVED U2!)  etc. Secular Music in Church? There are ways I want to respond to this question about secular music in church. First, the idea that we should make “seekers” feel more comfortable in church begs for further clarification. We should make sure that unbelievers can understand what’s going on in our meetings and that we’re not doing anything to make them feel unwelcome. i felt welcome at church bc i went from an infant up. but i watched secular tv all the time. the flesh loved to look at worldly girls till i learned i am gay. i'm reading a book my interests change, so my interest in women could be restored. But it’s not our responsibility to make sure they world's “comfortable.” The church is different from the world. We’ve gathered to build each other up by rehearsing and celebrating the Gospel, calling to mind God’s covenant promises, confess our sins, exercise spiritual gifts and much more. “To each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor. 12:7). i was a money hungry kid & my fav sitcom was about a millionaire's son, SILVER SPOONS. i was a money hungry kid & my fav sitcom was about a millionaire's nephew, FRESH PRINCE. i blame secular tv on my preferences that pulled me out the church. But there was the whopper i wholly blame. It is ahead. But before that decision came secular tv was-- had been-- brainwashing me. I wouldn’t expect someone who doesn’t know the Savior to be totally comfortable in that setting. Our primary goal is to make sure that unbelievers have the opportunity to encounter in some way the grace and truth of God revealed in Jesus Christ, expressed through his church. My very sexual friend i took to church really liked it. My cuz i took to church really loved the idea getting her kids involved there. 1 real close took her altistic son, he fought the kids, & she went back to NJ to divorce her husband. she also disliked how southernly sweet i am. 10 times she told me to be mean to her. Second, singing/playing popular secular songs on Sunday mornings can have a number of effects, some good, some not so good. What are people hearing as these songs are being played? Are they thinking, “Wow, these Christians really relate to me?” Or are they thinking, “Gee, I never knew Christians listen to the same kind of music I do. When i lost my virginity, i lost %110 stimulus before completion. For $300 dr said i was depressed, Free preacher said i'm egtting old. then every lover after her i charged forward till completion. every time. We’re really not that different!” Or are they thinking, “Why are these Christians trying to act so much like me? I was hoping they could provide some answers to my problems.” Or maybe, “Why do I come to church to hear second-rate versions of songs I listen to? Why don’t they sing about something that has changed their lives, rather than something I already know?” Hard to say. I certainly have no idea why someone would sing John Mayer’s “Your Body Is a Wonderland” on a Sunday morning. Here’s a portion. When i purposely fell out the church intentionally wrecking my life, i was promised a truck before Granny said it was all a dream at my 16th birthday party. i sang Sweet Home Alabama at my sister's wedding & have since wanted to be a singer. But i'm very loud, nasal, arrogant, i have a chip on my shoulder, & grunge is my very favorite. Oh yeah, i'm gay, intrinsic, & limp.
